A former child star who allegedly worked on Disney and Nickelodeon shows has opened up about teen stars like Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber.
The actor initially posted on Reddit's IAmA community, where people with interesting jobs or lives answer questions submitted by users. They shared a lot of opinions about Demi and co, including claiming that Demi was addicted to cocaine, and that Miley smoked pot.
The anonymous star is keeping their identity a secret. The only things we really know about them is that they are female, they had a number of background parts on Disney and Nickelodeon shows, they graduated high school at 15, and they have a parent who works for either Disney or Nickelodeon. They are no longer pursuing acting, but still want to work in the film industry.
Disclaimer - This is all totally unconfirmed internet gossip, with no proof behind it. If the former child star made their identity known we would be more likely to believe it.
Demi Lovato
"Basically, Demi's cocaine habit was pretty much the worst-kept secret at Disney for a few years. The adults in charge knew, but didn't want to do anything about it because she was so overscheduled (Camp Rock, Sonny with a Chance, her music career, all the extraneous junk she was obligated to do), so they let her do essentially anything she wanted and kept the press away by distracting them with Miley's "scandals" (which were all pretty tame compared to what Demi was doing, honestly). Her mother did nothing. Demi was her cash cow and she wasn't going to screw that up. That mom is as bad as Dina Lohan - constantly texting, ignoring her kids, selling Demi's relationship gossip to blogs in order to make some quick cash. She wouldn't travel with Madison (her younger daughter who plays Eva Longoria's kid on Desperate Housewives) and never visited her on the set. As for Demi's recent rehab stint... call me cynical, but I'm still 50/50 split on whether it was legitimate or just a PR stunt in order to A. get her off her Disney show (which never had phenomenal ratings) and B. give her then-floundering recording career a boost by giving her something to "overcome.""
Miley Cyrus
"Miley was never as bad as anyone made her out to be, I don't think. I certainly wasn't her best friend or anything, but she always seemed like a pretty genuine teenager. I remember hearing from people who worked on Hannah Montana that she fought with her family nonstop. In terms of drugs, it was fairly well-known that she was (and remains) a big stoner, and of course she started drinking fairly young (15/16 - not like Drew Barrymore young) and by the time she was 17, she was smoking cigarettes fairly often, but I never really heard about her getting into hard drugs. I did have a friend who went on a date with her a few years ago, and he said that she seemed really awkward and kept trying to use her net worth to impress him - saying stuff like, "Yeah, you know, I'm worth [X amount of money] now" and things like that. But that may just be from a lack of actual human experience."
Selena Gomez
Selena's a nice girl. Never heard anything particularly scandalous about her. She used to pop in and visit at Suite Life when she was on set but not actively working at WOWP. She's tiny (INSANELY thin!) in person and a lot more silly/less reserved IRL than I think she comes across in interviews.
Justin Bieber
"Oh, god, the Bieber story! Okay, so to keep it short - he was the guest on a certain network morning show. Shows up late, comes in with a HUGE ASS ENTOURAGE, smacks one of the crew guys in the stomach and says "Suck it in, bro," gets on the cameraman's ass because he doesn't like the way they're setting up a shot, and then leaves a mess in the greenroom. I've also heard accounts of him locking a particular SNL writer (name rhymes with Ron Julaney) in a dressing room when he was the musical guest on that show, but I can't confirm that anecdote myself.
Dylan and Cole Sprouse
As for the exploitation question... some are. Some aren't. There are certainly big issues with the way Disney treats their kids. There are "morality clauses" in their contracts that basically outline that they have to maintain an outward appearance of general purity and weird asexuality, and then dress them up in little miniskirts and send them into parties where everyone's drinking. It's kind of disgusting. The girls have it 100x worse than the boys - the Sprouse twins (those Suite Life kids, for those who don't slavishly follow Oughts children's TV) had basically a WALL O'BONGS in their garage (I saw it firsthand!) but nobody ever really cared because they couldn't be painted as "tween queens gone wild." When you get to higher levels and more serious work, I think there's much less exploitation than at those big corporations."
