Miley Cyrus Anti-Anorexia Tweet Draws Amen From Demi Lovato
Miley Cyrus made a controversial tweet over the weekend, posting a picture of a nude, emaciated woman to rebuke criticism that the former Disney star has put on some pounds. She then followed up this tweet with a second photo of Marilyn Monroe, which included a caption, "Proof that you can be adored by thousands of men, even when your thighs touch."
The second message drew the attention of Miley's friend and former Disney mate, Demi Lovato, whose body image issues were all over the news late last year when Lovato entered a facility to help treat her physical and emotional problems.
Miley then replied back: "I will destroy any one that ever calls you the F word. You have the SEXIIIESTTTT curvyyyy body. I LOVE IT!"
"SO DO YOU!!!" Lovato rejoined. "And whoever called you that has it coming."
Surely the two friends' support for each other is nice to see. But was Miley going a bit overboard here? Is it right for celebrities who intentionally thrust themselves into the media spotlight and, essentially, ask for the viewing public to judge them (American Idol-style), to be able to turn around and say "hey, don't judge me anymore?"
While it would be nice to live in a world where people aren't graded by their physical attributes, such is the nature of things not only in uberly image conscious Hollywood but all over the world. The media is entitled to their opinions just as Cyrus is (apparently) entitled to post a disturbing picture of a nude emaciated woman to prove her point.
For Lovato and Miley, they must simply find the confidence within themselves to see themselves for the beautiful young women they actually are, and have the strength to rise above the criticism, as deflating as it may be.
