HIDALGO Merry old England will be heading to the border this weekend, along with a couple of familiar faces and a string of musical acts as Hidalgos 36th BorderFest gets under way.
The four-day event with a Celebrating England theme this year will feature Disney Channel diva Demi Lovato as well as country music star Clay Walker, among others.
Lovato, 19, is a musical pop star and role model for sharing her struggles with bulimia and other problems. She will appear at 6 p.m. Sunday in the State Farm Arena. Walker, who is known for hits including Live Until I Die and Rumor Has It will play Friday night at the arena.
Admission Thursday through Sunday will include access to 20 different entertainment areas with more than 100 performing groups, according to the events website.
In keeping with the theme of the event, an England stage will feature a Beatles tribute band, as well as a cappella doo-wop singers The Alley Cats. Other stages will feature country and Tejano bands and various international dancers.
For youngsters, there will be magicians, ventriloquists, arts and crafts, and a carnival. An England Square will offer pioneer crafts such as tatting, yarn spinning and weaving.
More adult-themed activities include beer and wine tasting, home improvement clinics, a! nd car a nd truck shows. Lighted parades will finish off the evenings Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The celebration typically donates more than $50,000 each year to Valley youth groups, according to its website.
