Did Demi Lovato Diss Selena Gomez & Taylor Swift? Why We're Team Demi

(Demi Lovato)

A lot of fans are wondering: did Demi Lovato diss Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift?

In a recent interview, when asked about why her fans were so dedicated to her, Demi answered, "A lot of celebrities don't open up to their fans, they just tell them what they want to hear. They don't really tell them things that can benefit their lives, they just, you know, maybe flaunt around a boyfriend and sell a couple of albums. That's not what my career is about."

Was this a subtle dig at her former BFF Selena and serial dater Taylor? Or was it just an innocent comment that was blown out of proportion? Either way, we're going with Team Demi on this one.

We Don't Know If Demi Actually Dissed Selena & Taylor

In the interview, Demi never actually mentioned these ladies by name, so who's to say that she was actually referring to them? But even if she did take a dig at them, it would not have been completely unjustified.

Demi Doesn't Let Boys Define Her Career

With Selena, I always had the sense that she was dating guys for the wrong reasons. Recent reports even suggested that she had only stayed with Justin Bieber for so long because it benefited her career, and that he was "good for her brand."

While much of this is circumstantial evidence, I have to wonder about Selena when she always seems to be dating the "It Boy" of the moment, whether it was Nick Jonas, Taylor Lautner, Cory Monteith, or Justin.

As for Taylor, it's one thing to use music as a way to find comfort after a difficult breakup, but I have to feel sorry for these poor boys every time she writes trashes them in song. I almost have to wonder if she's using those guys in order to get material for her songs.

Demi Is Not a Social Climber

Unlike Selena and Taylor, Demi doesn't let boys define her career. She even passed up a chance to be with Niall Horan because she knew she needed to focus on herself for awhile.

And when she does date, you know it's because she really likes the person. She's not thinking about how this guy could benefit her career. She's not afraid to be with someone, even if her career takes a hit. (Wilmer Valderrama, anyone?)

Demi Uses Her Popularity to Talk About Issues That Matter

To be fair, Selena has done some outstanding work as UNICEF ambassador, and she should be commended for it.

But between Demi, Selena, and Taylor, I feel like Demi is the one who is most consistently using her celebrity status to raise awareness about issues that really matter to young women, whether it's bullying, body image awareness, or substance abuse.

She's not afraid to talk about issues that really matter, even if it means having to open up about her own personal struggles. As she suggested in the interview, she's the one who is really opening up to the fans and talking about things that could actually benefit their lives.

Demi Can Actually Take a Joke

Recently, it seems that Taylor can't take a joke. During the Golden Globes, when Tina Fey and ! Amy Poehl! er joked that she should stay away from Michael J. Fox's son, Taylor overreacted, commenting, "there's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women."

Really? Tina and Amy are comediennes. Everyone is fair game. If you can't laugh at yourself every now and then, then the entertainment industry is probably not for you.

Unlike Taylor, Demi can actually handle some good-natured ribbing. She spent a whole season on "X Factor" listening to Simon Cowell call her a "brat" and tease her for not having any contestants in the finale. Not only did she handle the teasing like a good sport, but she was also able to give it right back.

Did Demi really diss Selena and Taylor? If so, were the comments justified?
