Chris Brown's Twitter Vacation Couldn't Outlast Demi Lovato, John Mayer
Much to the delight of Team Breezy, Chris Brown has returned to Twitter after a nearly week-long absence from the micro-blogging website. Since he has yet to tweet 140 characters since joining again, fans are left wondering if the real Chris Brown is behind the handle or if it's merely a promotional tool for his Carpe Diem Tour.
Perhaps CB took the time away from Twitter to cool off after his online spat with comedian Jenny Johnson last week, but his hiatus left fans questioning how long the singer could stay off the social site. Sure, he didn't remain completely off the Internet in that time span, connecting with fans in a different way (thanks to his and his pal Rihanna's Instagram accounts), but his absence certainly recalls many other celebrity Twitter vacations.
Chris Brown's Twitter Timeline!
Reason for leaving: Lovato signed off in October 2010, days prior to entering a treatment center for emotional and physical issues. She had been on tour with the Jonas Brothers at the time and not only quit the site, but also the tour. Her departure quickly prompted the #demicomeback trend.
Reason for return: She didn't come back until March 2011, months after she walked out of rehab, as she was prepping the next chapter in her career.
Follower count: In 2010, right before she peaced out, she had more than 2.8 million followers. In the year and a half since her return, she's multiplied that to gain 10,640,165 followers.
Miley CyrusLength of absence: 1.5 years
Reason for leaving: Back in October 2009, the actress/singer left the site reportedly at the prompting of her then beau and current fianc, Liam Hemsworth. She tweeted at the time, "FYI Liam doesn't have a twttr & he wants ME 2 delete mine w/ gd reason"
Reason for return: In April 2011, she was back, using the handle @gypsyhearttour, for a short time, before switching back to her proper name. And, there was a good reason for her return. Ready for it? She wanted to follow Charlie Sheen.
Follower count: Before she left back in 2009, the singer had upwards of 2 million followers. Since her return, she's multiplied that following by quite a lot. Currently, she has 10,724,849.
One Direction's Zayn MalikLength of absence: 1.5 days
Reason for leaving: In August 2011, the 1D singer noted that online "hate" was the reason he left the site.
Reason for return: But, it was the Directioners who brought him back to Twitter life. He wrote a day and a half later. "Sorry, I was getting some abuse on twitter but I dont want to let my fans down. So I am back!!" he tweeted at the time, later adding, "And thanks for all your messages of support. I really do love! all you ! guys, your support never ceases 2 amaze me."
Follower count: He currently has 6,862,070 followers, up from the nearly 5 million he had before.
Nicki MinajLength of absence: Nearly two weeks
Reason for leaving: The colorful rapper quit Twitter on April 15, 2012 after getting into a verbal tussle with some folks on it. Days later, she explained to British talk show host, Graham Norton, that "A voice in my head told me to delete my Twitter and that's what I did."
Reason for return: She signed back on April 24, when she enthusiastically greeted her fans and shared that she would be premiering her video for "Starships." She shared with her fans, "*salutes the nation of Pinkslam* *hugs the barbz* *kisses the barbz*"
Follower count: Before singing off for that spell, she had approximately 11 million followers. Upon her re-up with the site, the fierce MC has built it up to 15,117,075.
John MayerLength of absence: More than two years running
Reason for leaving: In September 2010, at the height of bad boy Mayer's press run (sexual napalm, anyone?), Mayer jumped off the site and decided that if he had anything good to say he would communicate via his blog.
Nearly a year prior to leaving Twitter, he spoke to MTV News about how troublesome the site can be from time to time. Referring to it as "The Hate-rix," he explained, "I call it that because it's not really happening. It's just this fake world of people criticizing other people."
Reason for return: Since he has yet to tweet, we assume he hasn't found one.
Follower count: He had 3.7 million followers. Currently, given his lack of Twitter presence, he has zero followers.
