Demi Lovato explains why being a role model is important to her

Demi Lovato: singer, actress, and inspiration.

Demi Lovato has become a positive role model for teens after bravely opening up about her struggles with an eating disorder, cutting and depression. The 19-year-old Give Your Heart a Break singer once didnt like being labeled a role model because she was going through personal issues that didnt match what her public image was portraying her to be. After a stint in rehab and recovery, though, Demi has embraced her status as a role model and a public figure.

Lovato has discovered what it truly means to be a role model. She wants to help others who are going through what she has experienced.

I dont think it does anybody any good to just hide something or cover it up or lie, Lovato said during an appearance on Good Morning America Friday.

The reason why I did it is because thats what being a role model is about. Its not about being perfect. Its about speaking about your issues and inspiring others to get help. And I wanted to make sure that I shared my story with people so I can either help prevent them from going through the same things I did or help them get help.
