Demi Lovato says she's taking a 'Twitter break'

Demi Lovato is taking a hiatus on Twitter.

The former Disney Channel star revealed on her Twitter page on January 21 that she is taking a "break" from the social networking site and her 5.6 million followers.

"Twitter break. It's for the best actually," She wrote. "Who allows me to have this thing anyways?!!! I jus! t get my self in trouble! Haha. Anyway... BYE!"

Prior to her announcement the "Skyscraper" singer wrote "Can't please everyone."

Her announcement came a week after rumors that she split with Wilmer Valderrama, which were fueled by quotes she Tweeted on her Twitter page.

"The smartest thing a woman can ever learn, is to never need a man," she wrote on January 10.

In December of 2011, Lovato criticized the Disney Channel on the social networking site after watching a scene on its show "Shake It Up" that featured a joke about a model not eating. The singer and actress also reTweeted a follower's Tweet about a similar joke being made on an episode of "So Random," a spin-off of "Sonny With A Chance."

"What are we promoting here? #notfunnyATALL," Lovato wrote on her Twitter page. "I find it really funny how a company can lose one of their actress' from the pressures of an EATING DISORDER and yet still make joke about.."

The Disney Channel later responded to Lovato's Tweets, saying the episodes in question would be pulled, adding: "It's NEVER our intention to make light of eating disorders." Lovato later Tweeted her thanks.

Earlier this month, the 19-year-old singer and actress opened up about her ! troubled past and addictions.
