Demi Lovato becomes new ambassador for Secret's 'Mean Stinks'

With all the adversities that Disney star/singer and now X Factor judge has been through, Demi Lovato seems like the perfect candidate these days to represent and support girls who have gone through emotionally painful school bullying. The X Factor judge is the new ambassador for Secrets Mean Stinks campaign. The star surprised students Thursday morning at New York City's Young Women's Leadership School to inform them about the program, which asks girls to pledge to have a "Drama Free School Year" by making a pinky swear, symbolized by wearing blue nail polish on their pinky fingers.

According to People, Lovato, 20, dealt with a very public issue nearly two years ago when she sought treatment in rehab. Not only did she deal with bullying, but also eating disorders and has struggled with cutting.

Very soon after her recovery, Lovato debuted her two wrist tattoos that spell out Stay Strong, which has a powerful message, according to Celebuzz. This particular message stays true to the starlet, having gone through physical and emotional issues.

The new ambassador tells People, "People would write 'hate petitions' [about me] and send them around to be signed. They'd have CD-bashing parties of my demos. They'd come to my house, stand across the street and yell things. It was a very emotional time for me, and all I wanted to do was get away." Lovato also admitted that "back then, there were times I didn't think I'd be able to move on."

Because of her own personal experience with bullying in middle school, Lovato has developed a passion for helping victims get through this difficult time in their lives and hopefully put an end to bullying by encouraging girls to gang up for good."!

Secret's Facebook page page explains that with help from supporters, Secret will donate $1 (up to $150,000) from the purchase of every Mean Stinks Clinical Strength deodorant to the cause.
