We already know that X Factormentor and judgeDemi Lovato has struggled with an eating disorder, so it didnt surprise us when she came on Katie Courics show to chat about her experience. What did surprise us was a shocking revelation from Katie Couric: Americas sweetheart used to suffer from bulimia. What did these two inspiring women have to say about the devastating disease?

Demi Lovato was recently a guest on Katie(Katie Courics new talk show) and predictably, she talked a lot about what it was like to have an eating disorder. But Demi isnt the only one with first-hand knowledge of the disease Katie also knows what shes talking about. While chatting with Demiabout the alarming prevalence of eating disorders, Katie confessed, I wrestled with bulimia all through college and for two years after that.

Demis struggle with body image and eating began even earlier. I remember being three years old in a diaper and rubbing my hand over my stomach and I remember thinking in my head, I wonder if one day this will ever be flat?

The two also talked at length about the eating disorder mindset. Katie explained, I know! this ri gidity, this feeling that if you eat one thing thats wrong, youre full of self-loathing and then you punish yourself.Whether its one cookie or a stick of gum that isnt sugarless sometimes [I would] beat myself up for that. That is such a huge thing for people who wrestle with this.

Given the propensity for self-hatred, recovery can be a tough prospect for a young woman in the midst of an eating disorder. But according to Demi, the effort is definitely worth it! Treatment was so difficult at first. I remember walking around saying, Im in prison! But they needed to have those strict rules in order for me to understand how sick I was.Im in a good place now.

Were glad that Demi and Katie were both able to recover. Hopefully, their inspiring stories will prove helpful to those currently battling eating disorders and other mental health issues.
